HISTORY OF INVENTION & TECHNOLOGY

"Inventors," Mark Twain wrote, “are the creators of the world—after God,” and no nation seems to have had more of them than the United States. American Inventors will look across the span of our history to explore how a nation that itself began as an experiment has spawned so many innovators, entrepreneurs, and inventors. The multi-part series will highlight the lives and times of some of the most famous and significant—from Benjamin Franklin to Thomas Edison to Steve Jobs, from Eli Whitney to Alexander Graham Bell to Orville and Wilbur Wright—to tell the compelling stories of what they created and how those inventions changed history. But we’ll also look at some lesser-known inventors, as well as some surprising ones (Twain himself held several patents on inventions; so did the great conservationist John Muir) and try to illuminate the intersection between American principles and culture and the creative spark that constantly expresses itself with something new.
