The Better Angels Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating Americans about their history through documentary film. Our team is looking for dynamic, creative candidates for our summer internship program. Apply before May 14. Candidates will be notified of their status by May 31.

Development Intern – REMOTE POSITION

The Better Angels Society is a PBS-affiliated film and education nonprofit dedicated to supporting the historical documentary filmmaking of Ken Burns and other prominent professional documentary filmmakers based in Washington, DC. The Better Angels Society is seeking motivated and detail-oriented applicants for paid, virtual positions in the Better Angels Internship Program for Summer 2021. The Development Intern will work closely with the Development Coordinator to assist in research, writing, and outreach for fundraising efforts, maintaining donor records, and aid in the managing of nonprofit operations. This will be a valuable experience for any student or recent graduate interested in gaining experience with  a highly-successful nonprofit in the areas of fundraising and management. At the end of the experience, a successful intern will be able to demonstrate strong skills in donor outreach and fundraising, maintain an extensive database of donor relationships, have an understanding of day-to-day nonprofit operations, and have direct experience with nonprofit fundraising at the highest level. This internship will also offer extensive networking opportunities with The Better Angels Society’s partners including PBS, WETA, Florentine Films, the Library of Congress, American Masters, American Experience, and National History Day, among others.

Development Intern Responsibilities:

  • Donor research and cultivation
  • Assisting with grant and proposal writing
  • Maintaining and updating donor records and database
  • Helping to cultivate new and existing partnerships with other nonprofits
  • Updating and streamlining online workspace
  • Assist with financial records and analysis
  • Maintaining fundraising materials and tracking existing pledges
  • Meeting planning and organization

An ideal candidate will offer:

  • Strong research and organizational skills

  • Excellent attention to detail
  • The ability to work well both independently and with a team
  • A passion for historical documentary filmmaking and an interest in nonprofit work
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Zoom, and DropBox
  • Discretion in dealing with sensitive donor information

Requirements:

  • Recent high school graduate, college student, or recent college graduate
  • Able to work for a 10-week timeframe from Monday, June 7th through Friday, August 13th
  • Able to work three 8-hour days a week

Commitment:

Part-time working 24 hours per week for 10 weeks (June 7th through August 13th)

Compensation:

$15 per hour

Communications & Outreach Intern – REMOTE POSITION

The Better Angels Society is a PBS-affiliated film and education nonprofit dedicated to supporting the historical documentary filmmaking of Ken Burns and other prominent professional documentary filmmakers based in Washington, DC. The Better Angels Society is seeking motivated and detail-oriented applicants for paid, virtual positions in the Better Angels Internship Program for Summer 2021. The Communications & Outreach intern will work closely with the Communications Coordinator to assist in managing communications for a nonprofit organization in the entertainment industry, creating a national outreach strategy for schools involved in the Next Generation Angels Awards, and aiding in the planning and development of a virtual film festival and awards ceremony. At the end of this experience, a successful intern will be able to demonstrate strong skills in facilitating digital communications for a major film fundraising entity, creating press materials and assembling press kits for high-level industry talent, and assisting in planning a national film awards ceremony for professional and student filmmakers. This internship will also offer extensive networking opportunities with The Better Angels Society’s partners including PBS, WETA, Florentine Films, the Library of Congress, American Masters, American Experience, and National History Day, among others.

Communications and Outreach Intern responsibilities will include:

  • Drafting and editing internal and external communications (e.g. donors communications, newsletters, web posts)
  • Generating and executing a social media publicity campaign
  • Building a virtual audience ahead of this fall’s Library of Congress Lavine/Ken Burns Prize for Film through promotional efforts, digital campaigns, and donor contacts
  • Partnering with National History Day to highlight and celebrate the winners of the Next Generation Angels Awards and their films
  • Forming and maintaining relationships with NHD-affiliated school districts and PBS educational partners
  • Developing press kits for NGAA winners, LOC Prize finalists, and this year’s Honorary Committee
  • Helping to monitor press around our affiliated films and filmmakers
  • Assisting with virtual event-planning for this year’s prize and online film showcase

An ideal candidate will offer:
