The Adventures of Saul Bellow

The Adventures of Saul Bellow was a 2019 Library of Congress Lavine/Ken Burns Prize for Film Finalist that is now further supported by The Better Angels Stories Initiative. It will air on PBS in December of 2022 through WNET’s American Masters.

The Adventures of Saul Bellow, directed by Asaf Galay, tells the story of Saul Bellow, one of America’s most celebrated and controversial writers. The film uses archival and newly-produced footage and voiceover readings of Bellow’s own works to follow his career. The film focuses on six of Bellow’s own novels and how they portray his life, his experience as the child of immigrants in Chicago, and his writing process in order to get a better understanding of Bellow and American culture in the 20th century.
